I wonder if it will. It all feels so fast, even though it's been over 10 years since I started writing short stories, and 30 years since I started trying to write!

Petina, good tip! I am a little concerned about reading over 600 stories, but looking forward to comparing the two comps, one in which I read only the longlist and one in which I read everything. Will start exercising now!

Tafka PP (yeah whatever!) - missing you too! Be warned, Phillip almost died with exhaustion judging that competition, there were more than 600 entries, so get your heart checked out before you strat:)

I would have loved to attend the Small Wonder festival, but any festival that boasts writers from "Africa, Libya, England, Wales, Scotland ad England etc etc " is not one I will be happy to attend, no matter how much I love the subject. I mean, really: England, Scotland and Wales all belong to the same Member of the United Nations, meanwhile, more than 52 nations are bundled up as Africa, and curiously separated from Libya, which apparently is not in Africa! And to make it even more galling, they had only one African writer, and he a Nigerian, a country so well known it did not need to be absorbed into "Africa".

So, many bums on seats, but not this one:)

PetinaPetina Gappahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06833022790649452950noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32078352.post-46499880305141932022009-09-28T21:04:50.869+01:002009-09-28T21:04:50.869+01:00Congratulations! If you read back a few years on this blog you will find a sad and stressed post I wrote about the bitterness and jealousy I felt when reading the list of winners of a major short story comp and seeing all their publications. I was upset at myself for feeling that, I didn't want to read about others and get angry. So thank you for your kind words.

Ethel, congrats yourself on quite an amazing few days of acceptances!Tania Hershmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15781460794034586895noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32078352.post-68451748224353823542009-09-28T20:14:07.286+01:002009-09-28T20:14:07.286+01:00Congratulations, Tania. Thank you for your company, for the great 'writetalk', and for teaching me tapping! many many congratulations on your forthcoming roles, may you enjoy them and may they realise how lucky they are that you said 'yes'.
Brilliant idea about the 'second space' at festivals like Charleston. I agree that the bottom line is vital (a whole new meaning of 'bums on seats' - the bottom line! But maybe there is also a little corner for the excitement factor - the 'look what is going on out there' factor, and the 'wow - THIS is what a short story can do' factor?
Not the safe route, like a pleasant beach holiday you dont quite recall, but which was lovely at the time... let it be more of a knife-edge trip to Everest, or climbing a glacier or trekking in a jungle, or looping the loop in a small plane- something you will never forget.

These are maybe far away things, but there are also doable ideas.I loved my session at Sevenoaks, the Book Groups Tea - and am sending the details of that on to one of the movers and shakers of Small Wonder.

Sorry for such a long post.
