Two new books in 2022!

Very very lucky writer here—I have not one but 2 books out in 2022: a few months before my debut novel, GO ON, is out from Broken Sleep Books in November, my second poetry collection, 'Still Life with Octopus' will be published by Nine Arches Press in July. Nine Arches says:

An exquisitely-tuned second collection, following from her debut Terms & Conditions, and exploring boundaries of animal and human worlds and the intimate nature of time, existence and joy.

And look what amazing company I'm in, I can't wait to get my hands on their books! #gratituesday

I am so happy that my debut novel—"Go On", a hybrid "fictional-memoir-in-collage"—has found an amazing home; it will be published by Broken Sleep Books in the UK in Nov 2022!

The Hurst

We could spin cliches here – less is more, small is beautiful, short and sweet etc… – but let’s waste no time and cut to the chase, because that’s what we will be doing on this course. Without sacrificing depth, richness, story or meaning, we will examine and probe the tiniest works made of words – whether as prose, poetry or other shapes – and take inspiration from other miniatures across all fields, from the microscopic in science and art to the briefest of films and pieces of music, to create our own. Together we will approach the very small from many different angles, cutting down to it, working up to it, weighing it to feel every word, every pause and punctuation mark, discussing what is needed, what can be let go. Come join us in praise of the petite. No miniaturising – or writing – experience necessary!

My own shop on Bookshop.org

You may have heard of a brand-new online bookselling initiative, Bookshop.org, which not only sells books but raises funds to support local bookshops! It's a brilliant way to make sure we don't lose these vital booksellers, so please do use it for your book-buying needs. Publishers can have their own shops too - my fantastic publisher Nine Arches has one.

But not just that - authors can also set up their own virtual shop, which I have just done, so that, as well as buying signed copies direct from me through www.taniahershman.com, you can now buy a selection of my books through my own shop on the new UK Bookshop.org website - as well as browse an ever-growing list of books that inspire my own writing, from octopuses to short stories, poetry and hybrids! And I received 10% of any book sales through my shop, which is a real boost to authors, especially those of us published by small presses. Happy shopping!

5 Day Short Story Challenge - Aug 10-14

In April the Arvon Foundation ran a 5-Day Short Story Challenge using daily prompts that I’d written to guide you through the drafting of a new short story. Over two thousand people took part, and there were such enthusiastic responses, it was a joy to see! I ran it again in May – but if you missed it – or if you did it already but would like another week of daily writing nudges – here’s your chance! I’m running it again myself, using the same prompts, from Monday August 10 – Friday August 14. Every day you will get an email with a writing prompt and reading material to kickstart your imagination.

The cost to sign up is £5 – half of which is to provide me with a small amount of income, and half I will donate to Refuge, a charity which helps women and children experiencing domestic violence, something which has only increased during this lockdown. I am also offering several free places. Click here for more details and to sign up by Sunday August 9.

Get Gone - 2nd Prize

I'm delighted that my flash story, 'Get Gone', is 2nd prize-winner in Reflex Fiction's Spring 2020 flash contest! Here's a snippet:

Get gone, girl, she snarls and the girl, who never knows what she might be getting, goes. Galloping across roads, the girl feels herself small, feels herself dissolving. Giant clouds at the level of her shoulders try to make her laugh but the girl is not amused. Get gone, she herself says to the clouds, and to the snails that line the way, watching. Girls and snails never mix, this she knew from early on.
Gathered in to herself later, after a day or week...
You can read the whole story here.
